It’s fast approaching Christmas so hears a silly tip for you which has been tested on Mountain Lion.
As well as using standard alpha numerical characters for your computer name, you can also add Emoji icons.
Just go to the “Sharing preference pane” and click in the text field where you would type the name of your computer.
Then press the following keys: alt, command and t.
This will display the Characters palette where you can select a range of unusual characters, including Emojis.
Here’s my computer name:
